Numerous industries were located in the Llobregat basin in the 19th and 20th centuries that took advantage of its energy and water, highlighting the so-called "industrial colonies". The river water receives numerous contributions of pollution from industries and liquid waste from the urban centers located along its course, although efforts are being made to reduce them. In addition, the Llobregat today suffers from a peculiar source of contamination due to residues from the potassium mines, which make its salinity high.

The Llobregat basin is the source of drinking water for towns such as Sabadell, Hospitalet or much of Barcelona itself.

The Llobregat is an important river in Catalonia, Spain, which rises in the municipality of Castellar de Nuch and flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

Its source is located in the town of Castellar de Nuch (Barcelona) at an altitude of 1,259 m in the Sierra del Cadí and its mouth in the Mediterranean Sea, in the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat. The entirety of its basin is located in Catalonia. It crosses the coastal mountain range, alternating industrial use in the gorges with agriculture in the plains. It flows into a swampy delta. In that area there are many towns that in their time were essentially agricultural and that include Llobregat in their name, such as San Baudilio de Llobregat, Cornellá de Llobregat or El Prat de Llobregat itself. The river exceeds 170 km in length and has a basin of 4,948 km².
