Christiaan Rudolf de Wet (Lionhead, Smithfield, 7 October 1854 - Klipfontein, Dewetsdorp, 3 February 1922) was a South African politician and a Boer General during the Second Boer War.

In 1915 Helene Kröller-Müller commissioned the sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa to erect a monument to the South African General De Wet, a personal friend of the Kröller-Müller couple and general during the Boer War at the end of the 19th century. In South Africa in 1921 the statue was placed on the Otterlose Zand set up. The artwork can be seen from afar and is close to the bike path. With his left hand on his heart and his right clenched, General De Wet gazes across the drifting sands towards South Africa. Not for nothing, because the landscape is reminiscent of South Africa. Two faces are shown eight times in the base of the monument, including those of the farmers' presidents Paul Kruger and Martinus Steyn.
