The border crossing Helmstedt / Marienborn was the largest and most important border crossing at the inner German border during the German division and consisted of the "checkpoint Helmstedt" in the West German town Helmstedt and the "border crossing Marienborn" (GÜSt) in the East German community Marienborn. Because of the geographical proximity to West Berlin, the main burden of transit traffic between West Germany and Berlin was handled via this border crossing. He also served travel to the GDR, Poland and other Eastern Bloc countries. It existed between 1945 and 1990 and regulated the border traffic on the since 1975 in the west so named highway 2.
