Be sure to check out this beautiful church - it's something of a textbook on architectural styles, as it was built over a period of 500 years. The real highlight can be found in the church. The famous altarpiece "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan van Eyck is one of the largest works of art in Belgium. In the spring of 2021, the masterpiece of the Flemish Renaissance was given a place in the new visitors center of St. Bavo's Cathedral.

Jan van Eyck (* 1390 in Maaseik, † July 9, 1441) was famous for the meticulous realism of his portraits and was one of the first Flemish artists to sign many of his works. With his gift of careful observation and lifelike representation of reality, his brilliant use of color and his mastery of painting with oil paint, Van Eyck catapulted painting into new spheres.

Be sure to take a walk through the church's crypt and along the traces of the original building from 942 BC. View ancient books, scrolls, chalices and other fascinating historical works of art.

In the shadow of the church you will find nice cafes where you can end the day.

The Sint Baafskathedraal is one of the highlights in ghent when it comes to catholic achitecture. Inside you can find the famous Alterpiece painted by the Van Eyck brothers. There is an entrance fee for this though. If you don't like spending the money there is a replica at the back of the cathedral but it's behind a door in one of the side chapels so you might not get a good look at it. Also don't forget to go downstairs to the catacombs where some relics from ancient times are stored. It also gives you a view of the oldest parts of the cathedral. Oh and one more thing, can't enter with your bike ;)

The cathedral has been "shining" again for several years. In the mid-eighties she saw gray and gray from the exhaust fumes.
