Until well into the 20th century Büren was also known as the "City of Mills". In addition to the Niedermühle, today in Büren the address for culture and cabaret, the more than 750 years old Mittelmühle is considered the oldest secular building in Büren. It was built by the noblemen of Büren as one of three grain mills on the Alme. Since 1928 it was used as a mineral mill. So not only was grain ground in it, but also calcite and other types of rock were processed into stone meal. This was used inter alia in the production of paints as a pigmenting agent.

The Mittelmühle is looked after by the Büren local history association in collaboration with the city of Büren.
The current condition is thanks to a fundamental renovation carried out some time ago.
The drilling mill is in the immediate vicinity. There, tree trunks were drilled through the middle for the city of Büren's water pipe at the time so that they could be used as a water pipe. Contemporary witnesses include the old Kümpe (well) that still stands near the Büren churches.
