In Bolayır are the Türbe (grave) of Suleyman Pasha (1316-1357), son of Orhan I, the second Bey of the Ottoman Empire and the grave of the Turkish national poet Namık Kemal (1840-1888).
On January 26, 1913, Bolayır was the site of the Battle of Bulair, a major Bulgarian victory over the Ottomans during the First Balkan War. The Turkish government ordered the evacuation of the village within three hours. Driven by the gendarmes' whips, the residents gave up everything they owned, left their village and went to Gallipoli. Seven of the Greek villagers who were two minutes late beyond the three-hour limit for evacuation were shot dead by the soldiers. After the Balkan War, the exiles were allowed to return. But since the government only allowed the Turks to rebuild their houses and furnish them, the exiled Greeks were forced to stay in Gallipoli.
Bolayır was also the site of the Gallipoli campaign (1915-1916) during the First World War.
