The lighthouse is located near the small fishery, museum and seaport harbor near the center of the municipality Büsum in the district Dithmarschen.
The predecessor building was a wooden structure built in 1875 with a lantern, which had to be pulled up. The current tower was built in the years 1912/1913 as a guide and orientation fire and has a height of 21.4 meters. The fire height is 22 meters above the mean tidal high water and the range is up to 19 nautical miles.

It is already the third lighthouse that shows the way to Büsum. The first official lighthouse mentioned was a wooden structure erected in 1878 with a mast about three meters high, from which a kerosene lamp was raised every evening. The beacon was of no help to the fishermen or seafarers, but this petroleum light showed the mudflat fishermen the way to a safe return from the mudflats. A replica of the beacon can be seen at the museum harbor.
