From 1957 to 1964, Joseph Beuys owned his studio in the then empty Klever Kurhaus, during a period that is artistically seen as a hinge between his early work, which was strongly influenced by his teacher Ewald Mataré, and the groundbreaking work of the 1960s and 1970s. After Beuys left the studio due to his appointment at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, the building was renovated in the 1980s and the rooms were used alternatively. When the Museum Kurhaus Kleve ( kleve-tourismus.de/reisefuehrer/gehenswuerdigkeiten-in-kleve/museum-kurhaus-kleve ) opened its doors in 1997, the archive of the city of Kleve was located in the part of the old Kurhaus building . When it moved to another location in 2006 due to a lack of space, the museum saw the opportunity to restore the artist's original rooms.
The repatriation was achieved through a lengthy process and with a variety of support between 2008 and 2012. Since September 2012, Beuys' reconstructed studio has been open to the public again in the Kurhaus Kleve Museum.

Beuys worked here, among other things, on the “Büderich Memorial”. The “Büderich Memorial” is the only monument created by Joseph Beuys in public space during his lifetime. In 1955, Beuys submitted a design for the memorial to those who fell in both world wars to a public tender. He was awarded the contract in May 1957 - at a time when he was recovering from a serious crisis on the van der Grinten brothers' farm. In order to be able to carry out the work on the memorial, he rented rooms in the empty spa building. This phase marks a new beginning of his work. In 1959 the inauguration of his memorial took place in the old church tower in Büderich.
