Roy's Motel & Cafe in Amboy
It was 1938 when Roy and Velma Crowl built a gas station here. In 1940 Buster married Burris Roy's daughter Betty. The now enlarged team added the café and motel to the gas station and kept it open 24 hours a day. However, the famous sign was not added until 1959. After Roy passed away, Buster continued the business in the same tradition. Even in his late 80s, he still worked under trucks changing tires until he sold the property in 1995 and moved to 29 Palms, where he died in 2000. Albert Okura bought Roy's and the whole place for $425,000, a steal in California. He has big plans to re-open Roy's in all its 50's glitz and style and he has succeeded with the opening in November 2019.
