The Barbaratoren is the remnant of the demolished chapel of the Sint-Barbara Gasthuis on the corner of Kuiperstraat and Keizerstraat in the Dutch city of Gouda.

The Barbaragasthuis was built in 1468 by the Guild of Saint Barbara. In 1505 the guild built a chapel near the guest house. Saint Barbara was one of the fourteen so-called emergency helpers. She was especially called to help as a protector against the plague. In the 16th century, the guest house and chapel also served as a school for the poor. After the reform, the chapel was sold by the city council in 1581. In 1690 three houses were built on the site of the nave. Another part of the chapel served as a stable at that time.

Only building remains of the chapel and the guest house remain in the houses on the corner of Keizerstraat and Kuiperstraat. The Barbara Tower is the only visible remnant of the original complex from the outside. In 1859, the chapel's buttresses and a Gothic window were still visible in the streets (see lithograph by Gijsbert Johannes Verspuy).

The tower clock has only one hand, which indicates the time. The nickname Malletoren would be due to this. Originally this was the clock of the demolished Dijkspoort. Others, however, point to the tradition that a defect in the clock kept the clock chiming and that is why the tower got its nickname.[1]

The bell itself came from the Emergency God Chapel, but was looted by the Germans in World War II. The tower was restored in 1988.
