The Somerset Monument was built in 1846 to commemorate Lord Robert Somerset. Lord Somerset was a soldier who fought in the Peninsular War and the War of the Seventh Coalition. he was also MP for Cirencester.
It's a grade 2 listed building about 30m high with a viewing platform at the top.

A short climb from Hillsley next to Hawkesbury Upton is the Somerset Monument. Opposite is a large layby if you want to stop and take in the views.

This impressive monument was built in 1846 to honour General Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset (19 December 1776 to 1 September 1842), a British soldier who fought during the Peninsular War and the War of the Seventh Coalition. Unfortunately, the monument itself is closed to the public as repairs are needed to the cast iron balcony and stonework. However, it is still a fine piece of architecture to admire if you are passing.
