Legend has it that Gilles (or Aegidius) was born in Greece (or at least into a Greek family) and came to be trained in the spiritual school of the famous St. Caesar of Arles (died 542). Desiring great solitude, he retired to the mouth of the Rhône, in a place where wild beasts swarmed, a ‘balm’. The Lord offered him a doe from which he could drink milk.
The king of the Goths, named Flavius, was hunting in this forest, and he wanted to take the doe; but she found refuge near the saint behind thick thickets which the hunters could not cross: yet the king accompanied by the bishop shot an arrow which reached Gilles ’hand (or doe?). Before the prodigy the king offered many gifts to the hermit who refused them all; yet he accepted the construction of an abbey of which he would become the abbot.
