The Koningsdijk, located between the Spanish Quarter, a district of De Klinge, and Kieldrecht, was built after the Peace of Münster in 1648. With this treaty the Eighty Years' War between the Netherlands and Spain came to an end. In 1664 the boundary between the northern and southern Netherlands was definitively established. The border ran straight through the Kieldrechtpolder. The dike is not a reclamation dike, but was intended to prevent the States from flooding the entire Kieldrecht polder in the event of new disturbances by opening the locks on their side of the border in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
