The Papal Palace dates back to 1600 and was built by Pope Urban VIII. It was used as a papal residence until 1870 and later, it was abandoned until 1929, when following the Lateran Pacts it returned to be the summer residence of the Popes, until 2016. Today, at the behest of Pope Francis, it is not plus the residence of the Popes and has been fully transformed into a museum.

Together with Villa Cybo and Villa Barberini it forms the complex of the Pontifical Villas, which also boast a wonderful park, which in turn houses an astronomical observatory and the remains of the Villa of Domitian.
