The Col de la Bonette is located on the watershed between the rivers Durance and Var én on the border between the departments Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, just like the more westerly Col de la Cayolle and the nearby Col de la Moutiere and Col de Raspaillon. The latter two are significantly lower than the Col de la Bonette (2454m and 2513m respectively). The road over the Col de la Bonette was built for military purposes. The nearby Col de la Moutière has a lower pass height. From Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, the Col de Raspaillon (2513m) is first reached. This pass is already on the watershed between the basins of the Ubaye (Durance) and the Tinée (Var), but the road continues to climb along the side of the Var (Tinée). On the Col de la Bonette, the watershed is effectively crossed and the road descends towards Jausiers, after which the Col de Restefond and the Faux Col de Restefond is also passed.
