The local history museum was built in 1913 based on an old, derelict farmhouse from the 17th century. As early as 1910, the soap manufacturer and patron Julius Caesar Kähler bought the house and property for the new museum building.
He donated the completed building to the museum association founded in 1907. In 1938 the museum passed into the hands of the Heimatverein Buxtehude e.V., which ran it on a voluntary basis until 1989. With the establishment of the Buxtehude · Museum for Regional History and Art - opened in 1992 - it came into professional care and is considered to be its largest exhibit in the newly created framework. In the course of this development, the local history museum was extensively renovated by the architects Frenzel + Frenzel from 1989 to 1992 with own funds and funding from urban development. Half-timbered elements were renewed, access to the new building was created, air-conditioning room heating was installed and additional attic space was created. In 2020, the Hanseatic city of Buxtehude acquired the building, which is now in need of renovation, and will take over the renovation.

The picturesque half-timbered building was built as a museum in 1913. The building, which is based on its predecessor - an old arable house - is itself the largest exhibit in the Buxtehude Museum. Parts of the building were integrated into it from other old houses. E.g. a baroque front door, next to it a "Klöndör", the upper half of which can be opened separately, a carved skylight, historical tiled stoves, a baroque alcove front. Very very nice.

The Buxtehude Museum has been open again since July 2021, Tuesday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.! The Buxtehude Museum has been completely renovated, with more exhibition space and new, modern permanent exhibitions.

"Typically Buxtehude!?" is the motto at the beginning of the tour of the house and as a prelude to Buxtehude's town history. Here the frequently asked question "Buxtehude - does that really exist?" is addressed briefly and its background is illuminated. A hands-on station for the race between the hare and the hedgehog, which took place on the small heath near Buxtehude, brings the fairy tale to life.
