Carolingian burg
Burgh takes its name from the Carolingian ringwalburg, as it is called in Zeeland. Burghs had to protect the population against the Normans in the early Middle Ages. The Burgh-Haamstede burg is well preserved and thanks to additional restoration work, when you walk there you now really get an impression of what it must have looked like many centuries ago. The large surface of the castle is especially impressive.
