The Sint Anthony Gasthuis in Groningen is a national monument. It was founded in 1517 with the aim of caring for the poor and the sick. Until 1644, plague sufferers were also housed and from 1702 to 1844 the rear part was used as a madhouse. Over the centuries, so-called conventuals lived in the hospital, residents who bought in and thus ensured themselves of a well-cared-for old age.
