The Malapertus mine field on the outskirts of Niedergirmes was awarded in 1852 for the mining of manganese ores. The name Malapertus is probably a Latinization of the field name "fox holes". Manganese ore has been mined since 1860, but only in small quantities. This did not change under the Buderus ironworks, which acquired the pit in 1872. Ore mining was stopped in 1913.
Since then, the pit has been used by Buderus together with the large lime quarry. As early as 1912, the "Buderus'sche Eisenwerke" had acquired a large limestone site near Niedergirmes. There, in the immediate vicinity of the mine, a lime quarry was started to supply the Sophienhütte and its cement works in Wetzlar with limestone. Limestone was mined in civil engineering until 1957, since then mainly in opencast mining.

Next to this place you can take a look inside from the west side of the former quarry. There are a few stones between the road and the fence, from which you can see over the fence and the bushes even if you are not that tall. But be careful, there is an overgrown ditch in front of the stones as a trip hazard.
