This huge barrier prevents water from flooding the hinterland during storm surges. A cycle path runs right on top of it.

The barrage is interesting because of the technology alone. After the storm surge in Hamburg had also affected nearby Tönning in 1962, raising the dikes or a barrage was up for discussion and the decision was made to use the barrage. Construction began in 1967. At that time, the construction costs were very high at around 170 million marks. Furthermore, the barrage is also known for its colonies of several thousand birds, which also like to attack visitors if they get too close if there are disturbances in the breeding season.

The Eidersperrwerk mainly serves the storm surge protection and fulfilled its duties since 1973. It is a very imposing structure, but the huge gates give an idea of the tremendous power of the water during a storm surge. Each gate alone weighs 250 tons and is 40m long!

By means of the lock ships can bypass the barrage. So that even large sailors can pass, the bascule bridge was furnished.

Imposing structure: Five low-level gates, each 40 meters long, allow the Eiderwasser to flow into the North Sea at low tide and the North Sea water into the Eider at high tide. Next to it is a 75 meter long and 13 meter wide chamber lock, through which ships from the adjoining harbor come to the North Sea. The barrage consists of two separate rows with five gates each. Between the gates, a road leads through, protected by a 236 meter long tunnel. Above the tunnel is a footpath that offers good views of the west coast and the Eider. Also executed with double gates is a lock-up affiliated lock for shipping on the Eider. Together with the also newly built dike, the barrage is 4.9 kilometers long, is 8.5 meters above sea level and 7 meters above the mean tidal high water.

The bascule bridge often goes into operation. Whenever an excursion boat travels to the North Sea, the mainland traffic is briefly shut down.

The rivers in the north of Germany have floogates to stop the tidal water flow to the rivers and to maintain the river levels. These rivers are all used heavily for water traffic. The Eidersperrwerk is one of the largest of these river gates.

The Eidersperrwerk is one of the most famous sights in Schleswig-Holstein. The largest protection structure on the German coast was inaugurated in March 1973 and is to protect in storm surges from flowing into the Eider masses of water. In the event of a threatening storm surge, several gates can now be closed to block the way for the water in the Eider. The Eider Barrage is a popular destination.

                                  Eider barrage, Wesselburenerkoog
The Eider meanders 188 kilometers through Schleswig-Holstein before it flows into the North Sea. The barrage in Wesselburenerkoog is one of the largest coastal protection structures in Europe and always has a great attraction for tourists and locals.
The imposing Eider barrier, also known as the Eider dam, is one of the largest coastal protection projects in Europe and has had a strong appeal for over 40 years. It ensures shipping traffic between the Eider and the North Sea, drains the marsh but above all protects it from storm surges. Five huge double gates, each weighing 250 tons, ensure a regulated flow of water between the inland port and the sea. A 25 meter long lock with a bascule bridge for car traffic ensures the water level balance between the inland port and the North Sea and regulates shipping traffic on the Eider and North Sea. Cutters, excursion boats and private boats that steer to or from Tönning have to go through here.
Excursions to the seals with sea animal catch are also possible from here. The tunnel of the Eider barrage is used by car traffic and must therefore be driven through. The bridge can be crossed by pedestrians and cyclists.

Many a visitor to the Eider barrier will be surprised when they visit Germany's largest coastal protection structure in May and June: they are greeted by busy flight operations and a chorus of several hundred voices. The cause is a mixed breeding colony of several hundred arctic terns and black-headed gulls that formed directly at the barrier, on the dam to the south. The seabirds have chosen a rather unusual breeding ground - they usually prefer remote areas that are safe from disturbance. But here they have gotten used to the crowds of visitors and don't let them bother them. In addition, they have a certain protection, since the breeding area is fenced in and may not be entered. However, some caution should be exercised, as it can happen that the seabirds find a visitor too intrusive and attack him.

The snack bar is not the first address - but it fills you up and there is also something to drink. Sockets for pedelec chargers are non-existent!

After Tönning was hit by the Hamburg storm surge in 1962, it was considered whether the dykes on the banks of the Eider should be raised or a barrage should be built at the mouth. The decision was made to use the barrage. Construction began in 1967 (Wikipedia).

The design of the barrage is very impressive.

If you consider that the pressure of the sea with the barrage closed shifts the massive concrete foundations by several millimeters: How can you better recognize the forces of nature?

Interesting is the function of the Siel operation, which prevents the level of the Eider from rising extremely during flooding: a technology that the Frisians developed as early as the 11th century.
