The 5.5 hectare (ha) large nature reserve is located on the southeastern outskirts of the village at an altitude of 310 to 320 meters above sea level and is part of the natural space unit of the "Schlierbacher Platte" in the Middle Alb foreland. It is a secondary biotope in advanced succession stage with dry and wet areas, steep slopes and water surfaces. The former clay pit is an ecologically valuable compensation area in the local area.
The area is home to many endangered species, especially those endemic to endangered amphibians, birds and insects. Protection is found here in addition to water frog, common frog, common toad, pond newt and the yellow-bellied toad. Also rare birds such as yellowhammer, greenshit, chickweed, gazelle, garden willow and blackcap, hedgeback, wren, willowgiving, wagtail and zilpzalp are to be found. Particularly pronounced is the aquatic insect fauna, which includes scorpionfish, back and ground swimmers, fled-water beetles and larvae of several species of dragonfly.
Since 1986, the area of the Swabian Albverein, Ortsgruppe Wernau, maintained and cared for.
