The arched monument was built in the winter of 129/130 in honor of the emperor Hadrian, who was visiting the city at that time. It was outside of ancient Gerasa. Originally the arch was supposed to serve as a new city gate, because according to an inscription Hadrian wanted to found an entire city district at this point. However, this construction project apparently fell victim to an economic crisis.

After restoration work, which was partly carried out with the original stones from around 2003 to 2008, the three-part gate rises again to the original height of 21 meters, with a total width of over 25 meters.

An impressive gateway, access to the ancient site. Gathering place also for illegitimate dealers. Partly beggars.

The structure was erected on the occasion of Hadrian's visit to the city of Gerasa in the winter of 129/130 or the spring of 130. From 2005 to 2007, the approximately 37.45 m wide, 9.25 m deep and 21 m high arch was restored. A dedicatory inscription in Greek was attached to the arch of honor on a tabula ansata. It names the 14th tribunicia potestas of the emperor and can therefore be dated to the year 130.

Originally, ‘Hadrian’s Arch’ was intended to be the city gate of a new southern quarter. Instead, Gerasa grew to the north, where the Temple of Artemis was built. Therefore, the structure built in honor of Hadrian remained free-standing, 460 meters from the southern gate of the fortified city.
