The nature reserve is located northeast of Reinbek and Glinde within the Trittau state forest in the Lauenburger Geest.
It protects part of the Hahnenkoppel as well as the course of the Hahnenbek, a near-natural tributary of the Bille, which flows through a trough-like valley cut into the Geest slope. A 1.7 hectare part of the forest area was designated as a natural forest cell Hahnenkoppel as early as 1982 and is left to its natural development.

The nature reserve is characterized by mixed forest stands. You can find chickweed-oak-hornbeam forest, woodruff-beech forest and hornbeam-beech forest as well as in a strip along the stream wet forest stands with ash and alder. In places, moor birches falter with occurrences of pipe grass. Edge areas of the forest area are also characterized by coniferous forest. These areas are to be developed into natural forest communities.
In the other areas of the nature reserve, forestry use has ceased. Forest hyacinth, golden nettle and witch's herb bloom in the forest area in spring. In the shrub layer, among other things, Hawthorn, hazel, and ephemera.
A part of the area, which borders on the federal highway 24 in the south, can be experienced through a cycling, hiking and bridle path. There are information boards in several places.
