The Catholic St. John's Basilica on the Markt in Oosterhout is originally a three-aisled Gothic cruciform church from the second half of the 15th century (±1475), with a second aisle from 1882 on either side. The current tower dates from the 16th century. The church was built on the remains of a much older tuff church that was probably built between 1000 and 1100.

In 1625, during the Eighty Years' War, a large part of the church and the woodwork of the tower were destroyed by fire during the skirmishes surrounding the Siege of Breda (1624-1625).

The church was repeatedly restored in the years 1881-1883, in 1975 and most recently in 2000. The tower of this monument was transferred to the municipality in 1959 for the sum of 1 guilder (approximately € 0.45).

The church is a beautiful building of special antiquity and historical value. The stained glass windows in the south aisle depict important events from the ecclesiastical history of Oosterhout and in the north aisle, in the choir and transept, biblical scenes are depicted.
