Of princes, carters and pilgrims
Mighty castles, monasteries that are picturesquely embedded in the landscape, great views and the Spessart metropolis of Aschaffenburg are what make Spessartweg 1 so attractive. Since 2005, it has been one of the first trails in Germany to have been awarded the “Quality Trail Hikable Germany”.

The route is marked from the Aschaffenburg main station and starts in the pheasantry in the east of the city. Past the bizarre rock formations of the Teufelskanzel and a gigantic service tree, it goes to the legendary high cross and then further into the valley to the Schmerlenbach monastery. Here stands the proverbial Mother of God von Schmerlenbach, who is visited by numerous pilgrims every year.

Then the path dips back into the vast sea of leaves of the Spessart and passes wonderful beech forests, deserted, hidden forest lakes and gentle meadow meadows on its way to Rothenbuch with the striking castle. Before the descent to the Main, the Weikertswiese awaits with many protected animal and plant species and the historic ravine "Klapper". ......
