The Zemplén Mountains were built by volcanic activity in the earth history Miocene, which began 15 million years ago, and approx. It ended 9 million years ago. During the breaks in volcanic activity and thereafter, post-volcanic activity began at various points in the mountains. Here, near Sárospatak, a small geyser cone “operated” from which hot water solutions with a high silica content left. As a result of long-term operation, a terrestrial diatomaceous earth called geysirite is released in the vicinity of the source and in the ponds it feeds. This rock is very hard, greyish-white in color, strikes a hammer and makes a spark. Although the geyser later fell silent and then died, its remains can still be studied today.
The Botstone and its surroundings are higher than its surroundings because, due to its harder nature, it does not decay as fast as the rocks of its surroundings.
Hard rock was once mined as millstone. The battle of Matthias Hunyadi against the Hussite mercenaries of Giskra took place in the field under the Bot-stone in the 15th century.
