The lake on the island of Cres is a natural phenomenon in the karst area. It most likely owes the name Vransko Lake to the village of Vrana, from which there is a wonderful view. However, the local population simply calls it “Jezero” (lake). It is considered to be the deepest lake in Eastern Europe. The lake is a cryptodepression, which means that the lake level is above sea level and the lake floor is below sea level. The water is used to supply households in the Cres and Lošinj area. The lake is protected and access to it is strictly prohibited.
