Nieuwenhoven Castle is situated in a beautiful, fertile location amidst forests and farmland in the south of Belgian Limburg. Since the year 800, two farms and four castles have stood here in succession, built and demolished under the influence of history. Initially a country retreat for Benedictine monks, after the French Revolution the castle came into the hands of the nobility. History reveals that the castle primarily served as a "pleasure garden for nourishing body and mind." More information: kasteelnieuwenhoven.be

So called "Nieuwenhoven Castle", castle with farm buildings. Since the fourth quarter of the 13th century, the playground and summer residence of the abbots of Sint-Truiden; fortified in 1329 by Abbot Adam of Ardingen; completely renovated in 1340 by Abbot Amelius van Schoonvorst; from 1521 to 1525 enlargement and renovation by Abbot William of Brussels; the current farm was built by Abbot Hubert Germeys (1612-1638), the castle by Abbot Jozef van Herck (1751-1780); Nieuwenhoven became the permanent residence of the abbots, mainly during the 18th century; after the French invasion it sold well; during the second half of the 19th century, renovation works in English neo-Gothic style: carriage house with stables between castle and farm, and castle wing, burned down in 1932.
