One of the largest and most productive collieries in the Ruhr area was the Ewald colliery in Herten. On March 28, 2000, the last conveyor shift was run.
The Hoppenbruch spoil tip adjoins the site. Together with the Hoheward heap, it forms the largest heap landscape in Europe with around 220 hectares.
