Oene is an old place which gives it an old name. It is derived from the ancient Germanic 'hûn', which means 'swampy'. After all, it was located in the flood plains of the IJssel and has a high groundwater level due to seepage water from the Veluwe moraine. The annual Oener Koefeest enjoys regional fame.
