The lake is very scenic. The tour by bike was worth it.

The Wardersee is together with the Kembser lake, the Seedorfer lake and the Seekamper lake the remainder of an ice reservoir formed between terminal moraines in the west and the Eisrand in the east at the end of the Weichselglazials. At the lake there are 3 manors.

The privately owned Wardersee is drained by the Trave, which is its largest tributary. Another tributary is the Bißnitz.

The Wardersee, which is one of the 15 largest lakes in Schleswig-Holstein, is around 45 hectares smaller today than when it was measured in 1875. The reason for this is the expansion of the Trave at the beginning of the 20th century, which caused the water level of the lake to drop by one meter . This is also the reason for the considerable expansion of the reed zone in some bank areas.

The approximately 80 m long and 55 m wide peninsula near the village of Warder was an island until the Trave was expanded (around 1910). In the middle of the 19th century, settlement remains were discovered on this site, which are dated to between 800 and 1150 AD. Among them are the remains of the Nezenna episcopal manor.

The Wardersee is known for its exceptional abundance of fish. One of the pairs of white-tailed eagles native to Schleswig-Holstein breeds on its shore. The fishing rights are leased to a fisherman.
