The flagship of the community of Molfsee is the Schleswig-Holstein open-air museum. It is the largest museum of its kind in Northern Germany and is located at the gates of the state capital Kiel and on the eastern edge of the Westensee Nature Park. It interprets the cultural history and folklore of the country and shows how people used to live together without luxury and technical aids today in a vivid way. The around 70 different historical buildings from all parts of the landscape of Schleswig-Holstein are furnished with furniture and work equipment and are witnesses of a bygone era.

The open-air museum Molfsee shows and documents the everyday and cultural history of rural Schleswig-Holstein. On the 40-hectare site, 60 historical buildings from the 16th to the 20th century from different parts of the country and the Danish border region are presented in the context of a grown cultural landscape.
A colorful program of special exhibitions and events - from markets, theater performances and concerts to lectures - complements the permanent exhibition.

The open-air museum is worth a day trip alone, but it is also nice to see from the outside.
