Upper Lusatia is a rural region. But not only rural life has shaped the settlements and landscapes here in the past centuries.
In the 19th century, entire branches of industry, such as mechanical engineering and the textile industry, gained a foothold in the villages and towns between Dresden and Görlitz. And they have left their mark. In the landscape, in the buildings and in the way people live.
The industrial culture route follows these tracks through the LEADER regions West Lusatia and Bautzener Oberland.

VEB Kombinat FORTSCHRITT agricultural machinery was one of the large companies in the GDR. Specializing in the construction of agricultural machinery, the state-owned company delivered its combine harvesters and forage harvesters all over the world.
The combine was created in 1951 by amalgamating several companies from the agricultural machinery sector. In addition to VEB Kombinus Threschmaschinenbau Singwitz, which had 362 employees at the time, there were four other progress locations in Neustadt / Saxony, Stolpen, Bischofswerda and Kirschau. In the following decades, companies throughout the GDR were affiliated to progress. The management of the combine took place from Neustadt.
