The Mercatale bridge is located in Prato and is of medieval origin. It gave access to the homonymous square which at the time was one of the largest in Europe. Before the Second World War the bridge was enlarged and reinforced with concrete but in 1944 it was bombed and now has the original medieval structure.

Prato is the third largest city in central Italy and, in addition to the almost completely preserved city wall and the Cathedral of St. Stephen, has numerous other historical buildings.

Nevertheless, the city is not one of the most visited tourist cities in Tuscany.

This is primarily due to the fact that the city is an industrial location for textiles. As a result, a "China Town" has developed there. At least a quarter of the 200,000 inhabitants are Chinese. The often inhumane production conditions have recently given rise to much criticism.
