The nature reserve Pantener Moorweiher und Umgebung was established on December 20th, 1996. It consists of a diverse landscape section in the transition area between the natural areas of the Stormarner terminal moraine area and the western Mecklenburg lake hill country.
It is a characteristic part of the meltwater channel valley of the Stecknitz, with embedded sand areas, swelling moraine steep slopes, open water areas, silting zones, quarry and spring forests, woody formations of the mineral slopes as well as dry and poor grasslands from former soil degradation.

The area is 147 hectares in size and impresses with its diverse, partly contrary landscape structure: wet meadow to dry grass. It lies entirely in the municipality of Panten.
The protection purpose is to permanently preserve nature in this area in its entirety. It is particularly important to preserve and protect the ice age side valley of a meltwater channel with natural springs and moor lakes as a habitat for endangered plant and animal species and as a stepping stone to be developed on the bird migration route between the Baltic Sea and the Elbe.
