The Empe house was built on the grounds of the Hof te Empe, which was owned by the lords of Almelo in the fourteenth century. Later owners were the Ten Merssche and Van der Capellen families. Gerlach van der Capellen died in 1532 and through his daughter Geertruid, married to Thomas van Buerlo, mayor of Zutphen, it passed into the Van Buerlo family. Through inheritance the house eventually came into the possession of Johanna Catharina, daughter of Thomas van Boerlo to (Empe and) den Hengelenborg. In 1657 she was married to her cousin Joost Balthasar ten Grotenhuis. Joost Balthasar died in 1703 or 1704 and his widow decided to get rid of Empe. In 1710 she sold the property to Barthold van Diemen, the oldest mayor of Zutphen. He died in 1714, after which the house was assigned to his eldest daughter Aleyda who was married in 1693 to Wilhelm van Hasselt. For example, a new family, that of the Van Hasselts, entered Empe. This family would remain the owner of Huis Empe until 1983. The last lord of Huis Empe, Robbert van Hasselt, founded the Huis Empe Foundation on 9 November 1983. This prevented Huis te Empe with coach house, park and forest from having to be sold to third parties. The mansion was split into four separate homes, while the coach house contains two. The foundation has retained legal ownership, so that in terms of management everything has remained one entity, while the economic ownership has passed to the residents.

In the seventeenth century it became the property of the Van Hasselts, who managed the estate until 1983. Then the last lord of Huis Empe, Mr. Robbert van Hasselt, founded the Stichting Huis Empe to preserve the estate.

The foundation ensured that Huis Empe did not have to be sold and split the mansion into four homes and the coach house into two. In this way, the heritage of Huis Empe is preserved.
