The town is located in the southern Ennepe-Ruhr district, directly on the border between the Sauerland and the Bergisches Land on a ridge between the Ennepe and Heilenbecke rivers.
Not far from the Heilenbecketalsperre and surrounded by fields, meadows and forests, it is a destination for hikers and weekend trippers. In the village there are half-timbered houses and town houses that are slated and painted white/green in the Bergisch style.
The evangelical church, completed in 1827 and renovated in 2002, rises in the center of the village, where the streets leading to the surrounding farms almost star-shaped lead to the small market square. Immediately in front of it is a memorial for the victims of the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries and the "Schmittenboom". The latter is a local history monument made of steel, which the Rüggeberg local history association erected in 2004 to mark its 50th anniversary. It is intended to commemorate Rüggeberg's industrial heyday and, in addition to the name tags of eight surrounding farming communities, wears on its arms typical steel products from the companies that used to be based here (Schmitten).
Next to the "Old Cemetery" laid out in 1636 with restored and preserved tombstones from the 17th century is the "Haferkasten" from 1717, a granary made of solid oak wood that is common in this area and used both for storing the grain and for protection who served families from looters and during conflagrations. In addition, there is the memorial on the market square and small Schmitten, in which the farmers used to produce all kinds of small hardware for resale during the winter months.
