Fort Sumter is located on an artificial island at the entrance to Charleston Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. It is best known as the scene of the first military engagement of the American Civil War, which began at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861. Today it is part of a National Historical Park. The concrete structure Battery Huger still stands in the middle of the area and houses the visitor center and museum. A tour of the fort is highly recommended - history to touch! Access is by ferry from Charleston.

Here history is really touchable; worth a visit.
No one is said to have been killed during the conflict and until the fort was peacefully abandoned. Astonishing.
