Klausenberg (Rheinhessen)
The Klausenberg is a hill in the Wonnegau region of Rhenish Hesse, at the foot of which lies the Worms district of Abenheim.
The Klausenberg is known for the St. Michael Chapel built on it, giving the town of Abenheim its nickname, the Klausenberggemeinde (Klausenberg Community).
In 1298, Countess Agnes of Nassau, née of Leiningen (wife of Otto I of Nassau), received permission from Bishop Emich I of Worms to found a monastery in Worms-Abenheim, the remains of which are believed to be the present-day Klausenberg Chapel. Agnes was a great-cousin of the bishop. In 1299, she and her sons Heinrich and Emich reconfirmed this foundation.
The Klausenberg Chapel was dedicated to the Archangel Michael and is therefore known as St. Michael's Chapel. It is open for worship once a month and is also a popular venue for religious weddings. It is located on the Rheinhessen Way of St. James.
