Porta Udine was built in 1605 along with Porta Cividale in the northwestern part of the polygonal city of Palmanova. The door still retains the large wheels that were used to raise the drawbridge. Between the two small obelisks on the outer facade was the Marciano lion. Inside there were rooms for officers and soldiers on guard.

It was built, together with that of Cividale, in 1605. This gate still retains the two large wheels that were used to lift the drawbridge. On the external façade the lion of St. Mark was resting on the base between the two small obelisks. Inside there are fireplaces and rooms for the officers and soldiers assigned to the guard and for the Contestabile alla Sanità.

The first to be built was Porta Aquileia (initially called Porta Marittima), in 1598. It is clad in Istrian stone and is the most elegant of the three, as it was the representative entrance for famous guests and for the governors general during the time of the Republic of Venice.

Porta Udine was built in 1604-1605 and still includes the two large wheels for raising the drawbridge.

Porta Cividale was also built in 1604-1605. The façade is covered with rusticated white and grey stone. It appears more austere than the others, with its watchtowers connected by a balustrade. The Military Museum is located in the upper part of the gate.

A stone lion of St. Mark was emblazoned on the façade of all three gates, but it was knocked down by French troops centuries later.

The three gates can be viewed from the outside. The upper part of Porta Cividale is open to the public during the opening hours of the Military Museum.
