It is the first in the parish of Schupbach whose construction date is known. In 1302, as patrons of the Schupbach parish church, the Lords of Greifenstein and the Archbishop of Trier allowed Bela von Runkel, an unmarried daughter of the Lords of Runkel, to build and endow a chapel in Eschenau. The chapel was temporarily from 1314-1340 a church of a Johanniterordenshaus. It was consecrated to John the Baptist and still had its own chaplain in 1473.
