A hunting lodge is said to have stood on the Nesselberg in the 12th century, which belonged to Adolf von Santersleben from Rodenberg. His son, Adolf II, built the castle on the remains of a previous structure and from then on called himself Edler von Schaumburg. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1110, and it was first mentioned in a document in 1119. Since then, the castle has been the ancestral seat of the Counts of Schaumburg, who played an important role in the 13th century colonization of the Upper Weser region, East Holstein and Moravia . Under Count Otto I, the castle was expanded around 1390 by building the ring wall around the lower castle in the north and erecting the lower gate tower. The palace in the upper castle was rebuilt in 1521 on the old foundations in the Renaissance style. From 1517 the castle was only used as a widow's seat; its last resident was Elisabeth von Schaumburg, who died in 1646. In 1637 the original gate openings of the keep were walled up and the access route led past it.
In 1640, the main line of the Schaumburg family died out with Count Otto V.
