At the turn of the year 1944/1945, some V1 cruise missiles (Fieseler Fi 103, so-called “Retaliation Weapon 1”) were launched from Heltenberg west of Kelberg.
The National Socialist leadership wanted to use the so-called “retribution weapons” V1 and V2 to take “revenge” for Allied bombings and also used them as a propaganda weapon in order to “maintain the perseverance of the German people”.

The V1 firing position No. 18 was on site and was operational from December 30, 1944 to mid-January 1945. Soldiers of the 2nd Battery / 1st Dept. / Flak Regiment 155 fired V1 flying bombs to Antwerp (210 kilometers away) and Liège (105 kilometers) from here and positions No. 19 north of Bongard and No. 20 north of Heyroth.

Militarily, the V weapons did not achieve the hoped-for effect. The effort for production and use was extraordinarily high. Nevertheless, from October 21, 1944 to February 5, 1945, a total of 5,618 V1 cruise missiles were launched from four batteries from 14 positions. However, due to technical deficiencies, more than 20% of the bombs in the air crashed prematurely. The population therefore gave this "miracle weapon" the name "Eifelschreck".
