Otzberg Castle - Hering/Odw. 🚴‍♂️

A fortress was built on the summit of the Otzberg (368 m) around 1200. It was first documented around 1231 as the official seat of the Fulda Monastery. In the 16th century, it was expanded into a fortress, but this probably ceased before the Thirty Years' War. The complex subsequently fell into disrepair. 🚴‍♂️
On clear days, from the 17-meter-high keep, you can see across the Darmstadt-Dieburg district to Frankfurt am Main and the Taunus Mountains. The keep, popularly known as the "White Turnip," is the oldest building in the fortress. If you approach from the north (e.g., via the B26), the imposing mountain cone can be seen from afar. The Otzberg is the crater of an extinct volcano. On the northern and eastern slopes lies the small town of Hering, which originated from the outer bailey and the castle's settlement. Directly below the castle hill is a geological outcrop where the columnar structure of the basalt can be seen. The fortress stands impressively as a "vanguard" on a basalt cone of the extinct volcano, on the northern edge of the Odenwald, forming an important landmark. Otzberg Castle is now used as a museum, restaurant, and registry office. 🚴‍♂️

I think the western driveway via Nieder-Klingen is the most scenic.
When the sun is shining, the castle shines in the best light (in the morning).
The northern driveways via Lengfeld (at the nursery high) and those from Otzberg are in my opinion. From a sporting point of view, the most exciting variants.
That doesn't mean that the Lengfeld driveway has no incline!
