Neuenheerse moated castle
In earlier centuries it was believed - and still is believed today - that where water comes out of the earth there is a sacred place. The Nethe spring rises in Neuenheerse and that is why the third bishop of Paderborn, together with his sister Walburga, established a women's monastery here in 868, which was placed under the patronage of the empire by Emperor Ludwig the Germans as early as 871. Since then it has been called the Imperial Free World High Aristocratic Women's Monastery Heerse. Based on this fact, Ottilie von Fürstenberg built the abbey building with the same name in 1599.

The former seat of the abbess is now the moated castle of Heerse. After the abbey was abolished in 1810, the land and buildings came into private hands. The moated castle, whose moat is fed with water from the nearby Nethe, is today - like the associated gatehouse - a carefully restored, well-kept property and houses the publicly accessible, extensive collection of the couple Honorary Consul General Manfred O. Schröder and Helga Schröder After 18 years of work, they built this facility with a high level of personal and financial commitment and extensively renovated the buildings. An exciting exhibition of natural history, ethnological and local history topics awaits the visitor on an area of altogether 2,500 square meters. The design of the outdoor facilities already gives an idea of the diversity of what the exhibitions inside have to offer. Roe deer, stags and cranes - works cast in bronze from the Golden Triangle (Myanmar-Laos-Thailand) - characterize moats and green spaces.
