The lake arose as a result of the artificial dam built, between 1919 and 1934, along the Arda stream near the locality of Mignano, whose purpose was the creation of a reservoir for the production of hydroelectric energy. Later the lake was transformed into a water reserve for the municipalities of the Po Valley further downstream, currently maintaining only this function [1].

The basin rises to 341 m s.l.m., has an extension of about 2 km² and a reservoir capacity of 15 million m³; the depth is very variable as it is linked to the need for water in the surrounding areas, and can vary from a minimum of about 20 m to a maximum of 60–70 m [2]
