One of the best natural, undeveloped hot springs in the Sierra Nevada, Buckeye has several pools built by enthusiasts with rocks and river sand on the northern bank of Buckeye Creek, underneath an overhang formed over thousands of years by minerals precipitating from the hot water emerging about 100 feet higher on the slope. The most spectacular experience is perhaps a hot bath after skiing or hiking in winter, with steam rising in the cold air.
The river tends to rise after snowmelt and can wash out the pools, until volunteer build them back up. There are smaller pool higher up on the hillside that remain intact.
