The historic lighthouse was put into operation in 1855 and mainly served as a guide for merchant ships. In 1985 the function was taken over by the new lighthouse just a few meters away.
The old lighthouse is now owned by Dín l-Art Ħelwa, a non-profit organization that looks after the preservation of monuments in Malta.
The Strait of Marsaxlokk is excellent by Maltese standards so you can easily get the few kilometers to this lighthouse. Must not be missing on an island tour.
