The cause of the accident remains unknown, according to the Army

"It is exactly one year ago today that three US soldiers died in a helicopter crash in a forest near Lampertheim. The cause of the accident is still officially unknown.

On August 2, the Americans published their investigation results on the website of the US Army Europe: "The cause of the accident could not be determined," it says. There was insufficient evidence that a mechanical failure, external influences, pilot error or a combination of these factors led to the accident.
"All possibilities were investigated, but due to the condition of the crashed aircraft, it was not possible to determine the exact cause of the accident," says Hilde Patton, spokeswoman for the US Army in Heidelberg.

Neither the on-site investigations nor the research in the security center in the American Fort Rucker have produced any results. "We haven't found out anything else," says Stefan Nickel, spokesman for the city of Lampertheim. In total, the city received 165,000 euros to repair the damage to the forest caused by the accident. Except for a small remaining amount, the financial compensation was processed by a federal claims settlement office by last October. "It would be desirable to know the cause of the accident, but that is not in our hands," says Nickel.

"The investigations in this case are military," says city fire inspector Klaus Reiber. In addition to the American fire department, 45 Lampertheim firefighters and colleagues from Hüttenfeld and Viernheim were at the scene last year.

Herbert Kerkhoff was the spokesman for the former citizens' initiative against the expansion of the Coleman Barracks airfield, which later became part of the noise protection commission. He believes that the cause of the accident is well known to the armed forces.
