The place Malgrate is located on the Lecco branch of Lake Como, extends in a wonderful panoramic position opposite the city of Lecco and is connected to it via the Azzone Visconti bridge. The first settlements in this area date back to Roman times, but the first documents date from the 12th century, from the time of the Ten Years' War between Como and Milan. At that time, near San Dionigi Castle, there was a small fortification called San Grato, which was under the control of the Como Islands. On one night in 1126 the complex was attacked by soldiers from Lecco and Milan. In a terrible battle, the Como people suffered the worst and were subsequently slaughtered. The fortifications are destroyed and legend has it that as a result of these tragic events, the name Grato will become Malgrato and finally Malgrate.

Very nice village outside Lecco for the incredibly panoramic lakefront. The port is gorgeous and the view of the Grigne and the resegone is breathtaking.
